The Town of Smiths Falls is reviewing what went wrong after a cancelled Canada Day fireworks show was still set off Wednesday night.
Town officials say the fireworks display was cancelled due to weather concerns, with the decision communicated to the contractor, emergency response partners and the public. Despite those instructions, the fireworks were still discharged.
The town says safety was the top priority in cancelling the event, citing concern for residents, visitors, staff, volunteers and emergency personnel.
Officials say they understand the incident caused confusion and frustration and have launched a full review with the contractor to determine how it happened and prevent a similar situation in the future.
The town also apologized to residents and visitors who changed their plans after the cancellation announcement.
Smiths Falls says it is working to reschedule the fireworks display and will share new details on its website and social media once available.
