Here we go again. Another severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for the region as a long stretch of unsettled and dangerous weather continues.
After last night’s storms throughout the region and beyond, Environment Canada issued the latest alert at 10:57 a.m. Thursday, July 2, warning conditions are favourable for severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening.
It is the latest in a string of weather warnings for the area, with residents also still under a continuing heat warning as a long-duration heat event pushes into the weekend.
Forecasters say thunderstorms could bring wind gusts near 100 km/h, heavy rain that may top 30 millimetres, and hail as large as ping pong balls. Strong winds are considered the main threat, but hail and heavy downpours cannot be ruled out.
Environment Canada says local power outages are possible. Damage to roofs, fences, tree branches and soft shelters could also occur. There is also a risk of injury.
Residents are reminded to go indoors when thunder is heard. Emergency Management Ontario says people should take cover right away if threatening weather approaches.
The storm threat comes as hot and humid conditions continue across the area. Daytime highs are expected to reach 31 to 35 C, with overnight lows between 21 and 25 C offering little relief.
The heat may also lead to poor air quality, with the Air Quality Health Index possibly approaching the high-risk category.
Officials say people should drink water often, limit time in the sun, plan outdoor activity for cooler parts of the day, and check on older adults, those living alone and others at higher risk.
Anyone showing signs of heat stroke, including confusion, dizziness, red hot skin or a change in consciousness, should receive emergency help right away.
