October is walk to school month in our province.
When our kids walk to school, so many benefit. We wind up with healthier children, safer school zones, and less traffic and polution on the city streets.
Tawnya Boileau, is a School Health Coordinator for the Leeds Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit. She says parents play a big role in getting kids ready.
Over the years we know many kids walk to school with an older sibling or a group of trusted neighbourhood kids.
Boileau says in some cases parents can walk with their kids which is a bonus.
Boileau also recognizes that for some there’s no choice but to drive their kids to school. She has an idea how those families can take part too.
She says doing so can improve safety and school and healthy benefits, both mentally and physical for the student.
