A registered dietician with Rideau Community Health Services says small changes at home can make a big difference for families trying to eat healthy on a tight budget.
Glenna Sauve joined host Lynda D’Aoust for a Community Spotlight segment focused on affordable nutrition.
Sauve told Lynda the biggest savings come before shoppers even enter the store.
Plant-based proteins such as beans, chickpeas, and lentils can also help reduce grocery bills as meat prices remain high.
For busy days, Sauve recommends keeping meals simple and cooking enough to stretch iit out.
Sauve also told Lynda she suggests preparing nutritious snacks like yogurt and fruit, carrot sticks and hummus, or apple slices with peanut butter.
As the holiday season approaches, Sauve warns against saving room for big meals.
She also reminds families to relax while eating, share meals when possible, and buy local when they can to support farmers.
