On November 24th, the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority held a public virtual meeting to discuss their plans for the Naismith/McKenzie collections at the Mill of Kintail. Earlier this year the MVCA announced its intentions to divest itself of the responsibilities to operate and maintain the collections and to seek another party to take over.
MVCA’s general manager Sally McIntrye went over the history of the site, including how it was created and was transferred to the Authority’s ownership. She also included details on the operating budget for 2026 and the challenges involved in curating and preserving the extensive number of items involved.
Sally reported on her Board’s 2024 decision to eliminate any levy costs to member municipalities for CA programs that weren’t mandated by the Province or municipal regulations.
She indicated challenges with provincial funding which has remained fixed for a number of years.
MVCA has allocated a share of the Mills’s gate or admission fees to the museum and is considering continuing that practice with a third-party owner.
McIntyre indicated that the deadline for proposal submissions was May 31th of next year with plans to have the Authority’s Board of Directors finalize a decision in June. For more details and to view the entire meeting, check out mvc.on.ca.
