Last week on her social media accounts, Mississippi Mills Mayor Christa Lowry announced she will be running for re-election in this October’s municipal election. Lowry was first elected to council in 2014 as a representative for Ramsay Ward. She was elected Mayor in 2018 and acclaimed to that position in 2022.
She served as Lanark County’s only female warden in 2021 and is the chair of the Rural Ontario Municipal Association and a board member for the Association of Ontario Municipalities.
She says one of the best things about running an election campaign is increased connection with residents.
She’s proud of the work and achievements of this current council such as obtaining funding and starting the build for a new childcare facility among a list of other projects. As affordable housing remains a major concern among her residents, she was very pleased with funding received from CMHC under the Housing Accelerator program.
Mississippi Mills was 1 of only 23 Ontario communities to receive such funding.
She notes the challenges municipalities, small and large alike, face every day are growing in number and complexity without the funding tools needed to address them.
In her re-election campaign statement she said that “Mississippi Mills deserves a strong, steady voice that shows up, speaks up, and stands up for our community at all tables where decisions are being made that affect us today or tomorrow. I remain committed to ensuring our residents are well represented, respected, and heard, while protecting the sense of neighbourliness that defines who we are.”
