The latest episode of Silence Broken is putting a Pride Month focus on intimate partner violence in the queer community.
Here it is:
Host Bob Perreault spoke with Lanark County Interval House Executive Director Erin Lee about Pride as both a celebration and a reminder that equality is still not fully realized.
Lee said queer survivors can face added barriers when seeking help, including homophobia, transphobia, shame and systems that have not always been built with their experiences in mind.
Lee said violence can include physical, sexual and psychological abuse, along with specific tactics such as outing a partner, misgendering them or using discrimination as a way to control them.
The episode also covered Lee’s visit to Parliament Hill, where she gave testimony to a federal Status of Women committee studying shelter supports and transitional housing.
Lee said rural communities need better long-term funding, safe housing and more survivor-informed decisions.
