Perth council’s committee has approved plans to moving ahead to recognize Indigenous culture and reconciliation efforts within Last Duel Park — without changing the park’s historic name.
Council, at their June 9th committee meeting directed staff to explore options after receiving a delegation in May requesting the park be renamed with an Indigenous name. Staff are now recommending that the Indigenous Healing Circle, Medicine Garden and Healing Forest area be formally designated as “Ka Ije Mino Negockedadiik,”(Kah EE-jay MIN-oh neh-go-keh-DAH-deek) meaning “Where We Gather in a Good Way.”
The proposal would also include interpretive signage explaining the Indigenous name, teachings connected to the space, and the significance of reconciliation-focused features already located within the park.
Town staff say the approach recognizes Indigenous culture and community partnerships while preserving the historic identity and broader public recognition of Last Duel Park.
The decision will require formal council ratification at the next meeting.
