Smiths Falls police are reminding drivers that the end of the school year does not mean they can relax behind the wheel.
Const. Sean Keogan says summer brings a major change to local streets, with more children around our streets while parents are at work and school buses are off their regular routes.
As a result, Keogan is also asking drivers to be extremely careful on the roads.
Police say drivers should leave extra space, watch intersections and expect the unexpected.
Keogan says drivers should expect more young people moving through neighbourhoods, near parks and around recreation areas throughout the day, and says rules don’t change because school’s out.
Keogan says the zones are there to protect people who may be more vulnerable near busy streets and shared public spaces.
Keogan says families also have a role to play by making sure children understand how to move safely through the community, especially when using bikes, scooters or skateboards.
The Constable notes, a slower, more cautious approach can help prevent a summer outing from turning into an emergency.
