A Lanark Highlands swimmer is showing that passion, discipline and community connection can last a lifetime.
Frank Sedonis joined Lynda D’Aoust for the latest edition of *What’s Good* on LanarkLeedsToday.ca, sharing the story of how he returned to competitive swimming at 70 and found success at both the provincial and national level.
Sedonis said swimming has been part of his life since childhood, beginning at the West End YMCA before he joined swim teams in high school and university.
D’Aoust walked listeners through Sedonis’s recent achievements, including his role in an Ontario Masters Provincials relay team that set a Canadian record. Sedonis joked that he was the young one on the team, with his teammates all in their mid-80s.
That’s 320 years combined age of the swimmers.
He later competed at the Speedo Canadian Masters Championships in Windsor, where he won gold in the 50-metre backstroke in the 70-to-74 age group, along with several silver and bronze medals.
D’Aoust also asked what keeps him connected to the sport. Sedonis said swimming offers more than competition, calling it a lifelong activity that supports fitness, safety, confidence and friendship.
The interview also touched on Sedonis’s health setbacks, including a serious ATV crash and other medical challenges. He said staying active helped him regain strength, lose weight and improve his health.
D’Aoust called Sedonis an inspiration, while Sedonis encouraged seniors to stay active, stretch, stay connected and enjoy life at their own pace.
