Bill Dickson’s retirement did not last long.
After spending 25 years connected to the OPP, Dickson is now taking on a very different kind of public service as the new executive director of the Lanark Animal Welfare Society.
It is a move he did not see coming. Dickson says his wife noticed the job posting after he retired. He thought his next step might be something smaller, but the LAWS position caught his attention.
The fit makes sense for anyone who knows Dickson. His social media has long shown his love for animals, especially the family dog, Digby.
Dickson says that connection has never been limited to one kind of pet.
That love goes back decades. Dickson remembers having a dog as a child, and says the loss stayed with him. More recently, after losing the family dog Indy, he thought he was finished bringing dogs into the home.
Then came Digby, a rescue dog then named Bryce.
Now Dickson is helping LAWS care for animals waiting for their own second chance.
He says part of the job is also building stronger community support, from volunteers and fosters to donors and local businesses.
For Dickson, it is a new chapter with a familiar purpose: helping those who need someone in their corner.
