The latest episode of “Silence Broken: The IPV Talks” is challenging the belief that intimate partner violence is only a women’s issue.
Lanark County Interval House Executive Director Erin Lee joined host Bob Perreault to explain why people of every gender have a role in creating safer relationships and communities.
Lee said intimate partner violence is rooted in power imbalances and harmful social expectations. While statistics show men are the primary perpetrators, she said violence can affect people of all genders, along with families, friends and entire communities.
Lee said meaningful change can begin during everyday conversations.
The episode also examines traditional ideas about masculinity. Lee said aggression should not be confused with strength, while showing vulnerability, managing emotions and asking for help should be seen as positive qualities.
Perreault said men can also make a difference by supporting awareness events, speaking with their peers and explaining why intimate partner violence prevention matters.
Lee added that healthy behaviour must be modelled for younger generations. That includes open communication, equal partnerships, clear boundaries and regular conversations about consent.
She also encouraged people to become safe bystanders by recognizing harassment or aggression and finding responsible ways to interrupt it without putting others in danger.
