Joan Delaney is defending her decision to resign midway through the current council term as she campaigns for the mayor’s seat in Rideau Lakes.
Delaney left council citing concerns about council conduct and what she described as ongoing dysfunction, a decision she stands by.
She acknowledges some voters may question how she can lead a council she chose to leave, but says her experience gives her insight into the challenges facing the municipality.
Delaney says the mayor’s role is different from that of a councillor, focusing on leadership and ensuring meetings run effectively.
She says, if elected, she would work to improve council efficiency by following meeting procedures more strictly and reducing lengthy discussions.
Delaney says residents have been supportive of her decision to run and are looking for change ahead of the municipal election.
Delaney says her priorities include improving financial management, embracing new technology and addressing infrastructure concerns, including road repairs.
The Rideau Lakes municipal election takes place in October.
