Monday morning at the Perth courthouse, Justice Brian Abrams heard sentencing recommendations from both the crown and defence attorneys in the matter of the murder of Perth teen, Reese Stanzel.
Stanzel, 15 years old at the time, was killed in October of 2024 and the young offender, later arrested and charged, plead guilty in November of 2025 to the charge of first degree murder.
While it wasn’t called a joint submission, both the crown and defence attorneys agreed on their recommendations for the sentencing for the young offender, who was 16 at the time of crime.
The maximum sentence allowed for first-degree murder under the Youth Criminal Justice Act is 10 years.
The request to the justice was that the offender be given 12 months credit for the 641 days to date in custody and the remaining nine years be split between five years of secure custody and four years of community supervision.
Justice Abrams reserved his decision until August 27th.
