Kyle Blundell, also known as the Towne Barber of Carleton Place was assaulted by an individual on July 24th near his barber shop on Bridge Street. According to comments posted on a Go Fund Me page,(raising money to support Blundell as he recovers), he suffered three breaks to one of his arms, along with blunt-force injuries to his face and abdomen requiring emergency surgery. He’s reported to be now recovering at home but will require dental reconstruction and ongoing medical care.
The Lanark County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged David Murray, 48, with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and failure to comply with probation in regards to the incident. He was held in custody and appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice for a bail hearing.
Murray, a homeless individual, has been the subject of numerous complaints from the public regarding his erratic and threatening behaviour.
The OPP was asked about the number and nature of these complaints and why action wasn’t taken to prevent this type of assault.
Constable Corey Noonan stated that “the OPP is quite familiar with the accused having dealt with him numerous times for a wide range of complaints/concerns. The accused has been dealt with by officers on a case-by-case basis for each and every call received, and in cases where the law allowed, charges were laid.
The accused has been connected on several occasions with local resources and partner agencies, but the OPP can’t force anyone to accept or comply with those referrals.
OPP policy prevents being specific on previous occurrences or what resources he has been referred to and can’t comment for example on someone’s medical, financial, or personal situations.”
