Rideau Lakes is inviting residents and visitors to step back in time during a town crier competition at the Civic Day Community Picnic.
The competition begins Monday, Aug. 3, at 11 a.m. in Hanna Memorial Park in Portland.
Competitors will deliver an original public “cry” of no more than 100 words celebrating Rideau Lakes, Civic Day, local heritage and community spirit.
Judges will consider each participant’s voice, enthusiasm, creativity and theatrical style before selecting the township’s official town crier.
The successful competitor will become a community ambassador, making paid appearances at municipal ceremonies, festivals, tourism events and heritage celebrations. The winner may also represent Rideau Lakes at the annual provincial town crier competition.
The free event is part of the Civic Day Community Picnic, which includes family activities and entertainment.
People of all ages are encouraged to attend, hear the booming proclamations and cheer on the competitors as Rideau Lakes continues one of the oldest civic traditions.
