A Shakespeare comedy written more than 400 years ago is getting a modern update in downtown Perth.
BarnDoor Productions and Foolhardy are presenting *Twelfth Night, or What You Will* as the second annual Bard Under Glass production at the Crystal Palace.
The show uses modern clothing, cars, cellphones and a DJ while keeping Shakespeare’s story of romance, mistaken identity and confusion.
Producing director David Jacklin says it remains one of the playwright’s most popular comedies.
The story follows Viola, who survives a shipwreck and disguises herself as a man. Her new identity leads to a complicated web of unreturned love involving a count, another woman and Viola’s twin brother.
Jacklin says the production found new energy when actors finally performed before a live crowd.
Jacklin also thanked Emmet Cameron, who was ready to step into a role without any rehearsal after a young cast member was hurt in a car crash. Cameron was not needed after the actor recovered enough to perform, but Jacklin praised his willingness to help at a moment’s notice.
