The Town of Perth is proposing a series of traffic and parking changes aimed at improving safety around local schools.
The changes would amend the Town’s Traffic and Parking By-law and include new Community Safety Zones, lower speed limits, parking restrictions and a new four-way stop at the intersection of Wilson Street East and Halton Street.
The all-way stop is being recommended following traffic and engineering assessments that identified the intersection as meeting the criteria for additional traffic control.
Speed limits would also be reduced on Arthur Street, Wilson Street East, Craig Street, Grant Street, Halton Street and Robinson Street. Parking restrictions would be introduced or updated on Grant Street, Halton Street and Wilson Street East.
Community Safety Zones would be established on streets serving St. John Catholic Elementary School and The Queen Elizabeth School. The zones would be marked with new signs and pavement markings.
Town staff say consultations with school principals and police were supportive of the proposed measures, with feedback emphasizing the need to improve safety for students, pedestrians and other vulnerable road users.
Traffic data reviewed by the Town shows five reportable property-damage collisions occurred in the area between 2021 and July 2026. Nine traffic-related occurrences, including collisions, complaints and enforcement activity, were also recorded.
The existing Community Safety Zone By-law, would be repealed at the next formal council meeting, with all safety zones consolidated into the Traffic and Parking By-law.The work is expected to cost about $12,000 and can be covered within the current operating budget.
If approved, staff will proceed with purchasing and installing the required signage.
