With the municipal election approaching, familiar statements will soon be popping up: “What will I do for you?” and “Look what I’ve done—this is why you should elect me!”
For Carleton Place council candidate Linda Seccaspina, a lifetime of community involvement matters. But she believes there may be a better question to ask: What has a candidate accomplished with others?
Seccaspina says council is not a one-person show.
Every councillor gets one vote—no cape, no magic wand and, sadly, no special municipal Batmobile. She says, deciding to run again for a third term was an easy decision.
What matters, she says, is the ability to listen, cooperate, rally people around a good idea and turn that idea into something real. She points to the challenges facing municipalities, including affordable housing, business development and retention, community attractions, infrastructure and, perhaps most importantly, the ongoing question of where the money will come from.
She notes she brings much more to the table than just two terms of council experience.
She says she has been busy serving on Carleton Place Council through multiple terms, including 2018–2022 and 2022–2026. That experience, she says, has meant showing up, listening, asking questions, working with others and recognizing that sometimes the answer is more complicated than the question.
Seccaspina describes council as a team sport. While she has just one vote, like every other councillor, she says she has been in the room, rolled up her sleeves and asked the questions.
Most importantly, she says she has loved the Carleton Place community every step of the way and is asking residents for their vote in the upcoming municipal election.
