A community fundraising event filled with music, food and generosity has delivered the largest donation in its history to the Lanark County Food Bank.
Organizers of Rock the Pantry presented the food bank with nearly $47,500 following the Sept. 2 event, setting a new fundraising record and surpassing all previous totals raised through the annual initiative.
An estimated 700 people attended the event under sunny skies, taking part in live and silent auctions while enjoying donated food, beverages and entertainment. Eight bands donated their time and talent, keeping the crowd on its feet throughout the day.
The event was organized by Julie Vine and her band, Liquid Courage.
“We can’t thank Julie and her team enough for pulling all this together and creating something the community was eager to come out and enjoy,” said Tammy Parent, manager of the Lanark County Food Bank.
Parent also thanked the Carleton Place Legion for hosting the event and recognized the many businesses, volunteers and residents who contributed donations and support.
“And let’s not forget the Carleton Place Legion for being such great hosts; and all who donated in any way to help the organizers reach and far exceed their goal,” she said.
The funding arrives at an important time for the organization. Parent said the money will help cover the food bank’s monthly grocery costs, which average about $40,000, while also providing financial flexibility as the organization prepares to move into a new permanent location this fall.
The Lanark County Food Bank serves nearly 1,800 people every month across a 770-square-kilometre region. About 40 per cent of those receiving support are children.
Founded in 1988, the food bank relies on approximately 180 volunteers, alongside staff and board members, to provide food assistance, delivery services and other support to families throughout the region.
