A side of intimate partner violence that stays hidden is brought into the open in this week’s episode of Silence Broken: The IPV Talks.
Recorded on World Suicide Prevention Day (Sept. 10), the conversation between Lanark County Interval House Executive Director Erin Lee and host Bob Perreault looks at IPV, suicidal thoughts and coercive control.
Lee says the issue can be overlooked when people focus on more visible forms of abuse.
The episode explores how violence, isolation and loss of freedom can leave a victim feeling trapped. It also examines when an abuser threatens suicide or self-harm to pressure a partner into staying or returning.
Lee says those threats can put a burden on a victim.
The discussion stresses finding trusted support, creating a safety plan and knowing how to reach out for help.
The episode points listeners to Canada’s 988 Suicide Crisis Helpline, available by call or text 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Anyone facing immediate danger should call 911 or go to an emergency department.
The conversation is part of this week’s Silence Broken: The IPV Talks, which can be streamed below.
