What started as a new attraction at the Lombardy Fairgrounds has quickly grown into one of the area’s biggest community weekends.
The Lombardy Pro Rodeo returns Sept. 25 and 26 for its fourth year, and rodeo chair Alan Cooley says organizers have spent the past year preparing for another packed house.
The event has grown much faster than the volunteer committee originally expected.
The two-night event features saddle bronc and bareback riding, bull and steer riding, roping, barrel racing and mutton busting for some of the youngest competitors.
But Cooley says what happens outside the chutes is a big part of what makes Lombardy special.
That community response has also brought some growing pains. Organizers have revamped gate operations, parking and bar service, while adding more volunteers to handle the crowds.
For Cooley, who grew up around rodeos out West, seeing families experience the sport is the payoff.
Gates open at 5 p.m., with rodeo action beginning at 7 and after-parties starting at 9. Friday features Cashman Ford, while The Derringers take over Saturday night. DJ Johnny Five and free line dancing with Boots and Bling will also add to the entertainment.
This year will also bring a new way to follow the action.
Tickets are $40 per day or $70 for the weekend, with dry camping available for $50 per site.
For Cooley and the volunteers behind the rodeo, its rapid growth is proof that the community has embraced the event — and they’re ready to ride that momentum again.
