Kids across the region are getting a chance to discover what makes the natural world tick, and the Rideau Roundtable is making sure cost is not a barrier.
Its Eco-Literacy Program works with libraries in Perth, Smiths Falls, Westport, Kemptville, Merrickville and Rideau Lakes, offering environmental learning for children between six and 12.
Speaking for the Rideau Roundtable, André Frommer said six local libraries are helping deliver the program.
Workshops have covered wetlands, food webs, the water cycle and pollution solutions. Children have also built mini terrariums and birdhouses and joined outdoor activities including canoeing, orienteering and water testing.
The program is also looking well beyond what happens during a single workshop.
Close to 600 people took part in workshops last year across the six participating libraries, with organizers saying this year was tracking near the same level.
The program is free for children, supported through fundraising and funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Organizers hope to eventually expand programming to older participants.
Most of this year’s workshops wind down as school begins, but the program is expected to return next year.
