For 25 years, Lanark Transportation Association (LTA) has been doing something many people take for granted — helping residents get where they need to go.
The local not-for-profit recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, marking a quarter-century of connecting people across Lanark County and Smiths Falls with medical appointments, social services, food programs, counselling, day programs and other essential supports.
LTA began in 2001 with just two vehicles, including one wheelchair-accessible vehicle.
Today, the organization has grown significantly, with a fleet that includes several accessible vehicles and a broader range of services for seniors, people with disabilities, families and others who may have difficulty getting around rural communities.
Local MPP John Jordan says LTA is a great example for other small and rural communities to follow.
The anniversary comes at an important time for the organization.
Earlier this year, Jordan and the province announced more than $520K in Gas Tax funding for transportation services in Lanark County. Jordan said the investment supports access to healthcare, independence and quality of life in rural communities. He noted it was a suitable use of the tax revenues.
And the need continues to evolve. LTA has expanded programs such as Ride the LT, while also taking part in efforts to find new ways of delivering transportation services across the county.
The 25th anniversary celebration took place on Sept 24th at Beckwith Community Hall. It was well attended by municipal council members and Lanark County staff among the drivers and the public.
