The 125-year-old stone bridge over the Mississippi River in Pakenham has been undergoing extensive restoration for the last two years designed to preserve the landmark while improving its safety and extending its useful life.
The second phase of the project began in May, requiring a full closure of the bridge to traffic. The work included repairing and replacing deteriorated stone in the parapet walls, installing new waterproofing and asphalt, replacing expansion joints and deck drainage, and improving the approaches to the bridge.
New lighting is also being installed, including upgraded street lighting and illumination beneath the bridge. Lead engineer, Andy Huckwith states that a bridge will only last this long with care.
The restoration follows earlier work completed in 2025, when crews concentrated on the underside of the bridge and its five stone arches. That work included replacing concrete jackets around the bridge piers and repointing deteriorated masonry joints.
Lanark County says the bridge is now nearing completion, with a community celebration held October 3 to mark the restoration. Hundreds of residents were given an opportunity to see the work up close and meet members of the engineering and construction teams. The party was also held as a thanks to area residents that have had to deal with the temporary loss of a major traffic route. Huckwith noted previous work on the bridge has created provincial significance.
He added that the national bridge code has now been upgraded to incorporate studies and lessons from the 5-arch structure.
The Five-Span Bridge was built in 1901 for $14,500 and is recognized as a unique historic structure and one of Lanark County’s Seven Wonders. It’s the only one of its kind in North America.
The current restoration, expected to be complete by the end of October has an estimated price tag of $2.6M
