A lifelong Perth resident, Trevor Oattes is a journalist and corporate communications professional who says he brings experience in labour advocacy and community service to his candidacy for town council.
He is an elected union steward and officer in his OPSEU local, leads its communications committee and serves on the board of Linden Housing Co-operative. Inspired by his work in the labour movement, he is running to bring a working person’s perspective and a stronger voice for everyday residents to council.
He tells us why he’s running.
Oattes is focused on housing affordability, childcare and retaining workers in Perth.
He wants to work to create a municipal Co-operative Development Policy to encourage housing, childcare and worker co-ops through partnerships, advocacy, reduced red tape and potential startup support.
He also sees co-operative transit as possibilities for the future. He tells us why that’s important.
As a young worker, Oattes hopes to support the needs of working people, parents, renters and people from all backgrounds while building a more affordable, accessible and responsive Perth. You can hear our complete conversation with him below.
