What does it take to build a stronger Canada when affordability, economic uncertainty and political division are putting pressure on communities? Former northern Ontario MP, author, musician and activist Charlie Angus is bringing that question to Almonte as part of his cross-country Resistance Tour.
Angus will appear at the Almonte Civitan on October 22, in an event hosted by What Now Lanark County, the Mississippi Mills Community Fund and the Humm. The evening is intended to spark conversation about the challenges facing Canadians and what people can do, starting in their own communities, to shape the country’s future. The doors open at 6 pm and Charlie takes to the stage at 7 with a Q and A session to follow.
Angus spent decades representing working people and rural and northern communities in Parliament, advocating on issues including affordability and Canadian sovereignty. His tour is taking those discussions directly to Canadians, encouraging people to consider how they can respond to the pressures facing the country. Angus explains the message behind the Tour and the challenges facing Canadians.
For the Mississippi Mills Community Fund, the conversation also has a practical, local focus. Chair Jane Torrance says that while national challenges can seem overwhelming, people still have the power to make a difference close to home. Angus says the Canadian boycott of American products and services is one thing we can all support and it’s making a real difference.
Organizers say the October 22 gathering is an opportunity to hear Angus’s perspective, exchange ideas and consider how stronger local connections can contribute to a stronger country. The underlying message is that building Canada’s future doesn’t have to begin in Ottawa. It can begin with what people choose to do in their own communities.
Proceeds will support the Mississippi Mills Community Fund, helping grow a permanent local fund that can respond to emerging community needs and opportunities.
The event is being organized by three local groups. What Now Lanark County is a grassroots community initiative founded in 2022 to spark conversations and bring people together around issues that matter. The Mississippi Mills Community Fund works to strengthen our community by connecting local generosity with local needs and opportunities, while the Humm has long helped connect people across the region through stories about arts, culture and community life.
Together, they are pleased to welcome Charlie Angus and The Resistance Tour to Lanark County for an evening of conversation about the issues shaping our communities and our country—and the role each of us can play closer to home.
Tickets are $25, are going fast, and are available through ticketsplease.ca.
