Marilyn Thomas says better communication, more child-care options and a commitment to working together would be among her top priorities if elected reeve of Tay Valley Township.
Thomas, who is seeking the township’s top elected position, says she wants to build on the work already underway while making sure residents have a stronger voice in local decisions.
She identifies communication as one of the biggest areas needing improvement.
Thomas believes the township needs to find better ways to connect with residents, whether through public meetings, online information or other methods.
She says too many people feel their concerns aren’t being heard.
Thomas also acknowledges council could have been more proactive in addressing public criticism.
She says the township should have responded sooner to some concerns circulating online, rather than allowing questions about council decisions to go unanswered.
Another major priority is improving access to child care.
Thomas believes the lack of available services creates challenges for families who want to live in Tay Valley but work elsewhere.
She wants to explore possible solutions with residents and community partners, particularly as the township continues to grow.
Thomas says the township should also be asking residents and local organizations what barriers they’re facing, including when it comes to housing and establishing services.
When it comes to strong mayor powers, Thomas takes a firm position.
She says she has opposed the additional authority since it was introduced and would not use it if elected.
Thomas believes decisions should remain a shared responsibility among elected councillors.
Thomas also points to what she considers the township’s healthy financial reserves, long-term planning and success securing more than $700,000 in grants during the current council term.
She says she wants to maintain that progress while improving services and finding practical solutions to community concerns.
Thomas says a council that listens, works together and follows through on commitments is essential to Tay Valley’s future.
