After eight years in municipal politics, outgoing Tay Valley Township Reeve Rob Rainer is preparing to step away from the council table, proud of what was accomplished and comfortable with his decision to move on.
Rainer served four years as a ward councillor before spending the last four as Reeve. He decided earlier this year not to seek re-election, saying it was time to pursue other interests.
At 67, he says he wants to make the most of the years ahead.
Looking back, Rainer says one of his greatest sources of pride is having remained independent, even when his views weren’t shared by the majority of council.
He also points to a number of accomplishments, including the development of Forest Trail Park in Stanleyville and maintaining positive working relationships between council and township staff.
Those relationships were sometimes tested.
Rainer says municipal employees have faced personal criticism online, something he and other members of council have publicly challenged.
Despite differences of opinion on important issues, Rainer says the outgoing council worked hard to maintain a respectful atmosphere.
Looking ahead, Tay Valley will welcome five new members to its eight-member council, although incoming Reeve RoxAnne Darling brings about 20 years of previous municipal experience.
Rainer hopes the new council will focus on the public interest, maintain strong relationships with staff and recognize that serving in municipal government requires compromise.
He also encourages anyone considering public office to take the opportunity, acknowledging there’s a steep learning curve and that not every decision will go their way.
As for his own legacy, Rainer isn’t focused on political victories or having his name attached to projects.
Instead, he hopes residents and colleagues remember how he treated people.
Rainer acknowledges that criticism comes with elected office and that not everyone will agree with his decisions.
But he says he’s leaving municipal politics satisfied with his contribution and looking forward to the next chapter.
