Crime Prevention Week is underway, and the Smiths Falls Police Service is using the occasion to remind residents that keeping the community safe involves much more than responding to emergencies and investigating crimes.
Community Service Officer Constable Sean Keoghan says the week provides an opportunity to showcase programs and services that operate throughout the year but don’t always receive much attention.
One example is CamSafe, a program that allows residents and businesses to register their security cameras to help police locate potential video evidence during investigations.
Keoghan emphasizes that registering doesn’t give officers unrestricted access to anyone’s cameras.
Another valuable service is available right outside the police station, where residents can conduct transactions in a safer environment.
Police also offer crime prevention assessments for homes and businesses, helping identify property features that could make break-ins easier.
Officers continue to educate residents about fraud, conduct RIDE checks throughout the year and provide safety presentations in local schools.
Keoghan says that work includes helping residents recognize increasingly sophisticated scams.
The message behind Crime Prevention Week is simple: preventing crime is a shared responsibility, and the Smiths Falls Police Service has resources available to help residents protect themselves, their families and their property.
