Rideau Lakes Mayor Arie Hoogenboom is pressing pause on his duties, citing ongoing conflicts with council members.
In a statement released March 10, Hoogenboom said the decision was made on the advice of his doctor, family, and friends. He blamed “unacceptable behaviour” from five council members who he says are trying to undermine his leadership.
“Despite the strong electoral mandate that I have always received from our voters, this pause will allow me to consider my role going forward,” he wrote.
During this time, Hoogenboom will focus on his work with the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, where he says his input is valued. He urged remaining council members to improve accountability and civility.
His announcement follows the last week’s resignation of Rideau Lakes Councillor Joan Delaney and a recent non-binding vote of no confidence in his leadership.
Deputy Mayor Paula Banks will chair meetings in Hoogenboom’s absence.
His full statement is below.
“Effective immediately I will be taking a pause from some of the mayor’s duties at the Township of Rideau Lakes. This decision was not made lightly and comes at the urging of my doctor, family and friends. The continuous unacceptable behaviour of five members of Township Council who seek to undermine my leadership has brough me to this point. Despite the strong electoral mandate that I have always received from our voters, this pause will allow me to consider my role going forward.
During this period, I will focus on United Counties of Leeds and Grenville business where my input is valued. It is my sincere hope that the remaining Township Council members will move towards greater accountability, transparency and civility.
I do want to thank all Township staff for their unwavering support of me and their professionalism during these challenging political times.”
