The RCL Automotive Build a Mountain of Food campaign has reached a major milestone as Week 3 wrapped up with huge totals in Smiths Falls and across the region. Organizers say donations continue to pour in as residents, businesses and service clubs stepped up in a big way.
In Smiths Falls, support for the Smiths Falls Community Food Bank was strong, with 22,572.5 pounds of food collected and $10,551.50 in cash donated.
The cash total included major contributions from community partners: $3,000 from the Smiths Falls Civitan Club, $2,500 from RCL Automotive, and $1,500 from Scott Flemming at Rideau Home Hardware Building Centre. Another $3,551.50 came from cash boxes placed at local stores.
Local generosity didn’t stop there. Sylvie Jonsson of Jonsson’s Your Independent Grocer donated $5 to the food bank for every pre-packaged bag sold, with more than 900 bags purchased and sales continuing. Derek Buffam of Garden Market pledged $5,000 on top of his match program, which doubles the food items bought for donation.
Ross Muir at Giant Tiger added a full skid of food and hundreds of pre-packed bags, while Food Basics also offered donation bags for shoppers wanting to help.
Across all communities involved in the campaign, totals through Week 3 have climbed to 103,926.5 pounds of food and $29,535.50 in cash.
