Volunteers collect donations in Merrickville (Photo Build a Mountain of Food)
The Merrickville Lions Club says more families than ever are turning to its annual Christmas Hamper program as food insecurity continues to rise — and volunteers are gearing up for a busy Build a Mountain of Food drive this weekend.
Member Mark Scullino says the long-running program dates back to 1990, and this year’s need is expected to surpass 80 hampers.
Last year the club delivered 74 hampers, but Mark Scullino says rising costs mean more people are reaching out for help.
The hampers include turkey or ham, vegetables, fruit, stuffing, gravy and bread — with major support from local merchants and the RCL Automotive Build a Mountain of Food campaign.
Donations will be accepted Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. during Christmas in Merrickville, outside of the Merrickville Food Mart as part of the RCL Automotive Build a Mountain of Food
