The Portland Food Bank is once again asking the community for help as it hosts the RCL Automotive Build a Mountain of Food Campaign on Saturday.
Manager Anita Cox says the shelves rely heavily on non-perishable staples — and many of those items are becoming harder for families to afford.
Cox says several foods are essential every week because nearly every client takes them.
She adds that the proteins and cooking oils are also in high demand because they are expensive for families to buy on their own.
The Portland Food Bank tries to keep about 75 items stocked at all times. Cox says volunteers watch flyers closely to stretch every donated dollar.
Cox encourages anyone who is able to give to consider supporting the food bank, noting that many people who need help might not be the ones you expect.
She says donations make a direct difference for households struggling to afford groceries until their next paycheque arrives.
The RCL Build a Mountain of Food rolls into Portland from 9 until noon in front of the RCB and LCBO on Saturday, then heads to Merrickville at 1 in front of the Foodmart.
