There’s still a lot of uncertainty after a dramatic weekend that saw Venezuela’s president taken to New York City to face drug and weapons charges.
Trent University history professor Dr. David Shein says while court proceedings against Nicolas Maduro will follow their course, what will happen on the ground in the South American country is a big question.
Dr. Sheinin says some people are surprised more officials weren’t removed, but keeping some continuity in the short term helps ensure a smooth transition.
Dr. Sheinin says Venezuela’s large oil reserves, already used by China and Russia, mean Canada should pay close attention to U.S. access to that oil.
Sheinen, and many others will be watching the situation closely as it unfolds.
