The latest episode of Silence Broken: The IPV talks, addresses children who witness intimate partner violence at home. Hosts Bob Perreault and Erin Lee of Lanark County Interval House discuss how children are victims too and often carry that trauma into everyday life, including school.
Lee says violence affects children even if they only hear arguments or live with constant fear.
Lee says it’s important people know agencies provide specialized support for young witnesses, including counselling, group programs and school-based services.
Trauma can surface in many ways. Some children become aggressive, withdrawn or anxious, while others regress or struggle academically.
Lee says some may even copy the behaviour of a victim to avoid harm.
Experts stress early help is critical. With proper support, Lee says, children can heal, build resilience and develop healthier relationship patterns later in life.
