The Mayor of Westport has announced retirement from municipal politics, marking the end of nearly five decades of public service, including 13 years on Westport Village Council.
In a statement, Robin Jones said the decision to step away was not made lightly, describing public service as a defining part of their life.
Jones reflected on years working alongside residents, volunteers, staff, and local business owners, calling it an honour and privilege to serve the community.
Key accomplishments highlighted include strengthening Westport’s financial position, rebuilding reserves, and increasing borrowing capacity.
Major infrastructure projects completed during the tenure include a new wastewater system, reconstruction of Bedford Street, and ongoing upgrades at the WTC Communications Centre.
The statement also emphasized improvements to municipal administration, including modernized policies, stronger accountability, and more efficient service delivery.
Beyond Westport, Jones also served in regional and provincial leadership roles, including with the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, the Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus, the Rural Ontario Municipal Association, and as president of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario.
No retirement date was disclosed.
The statement concluded with thanks to council, staff, volunteers, and residents, adding that “every exit line is an entry,” and expressing optimism for Westport’s future.
