Two new veterans memorial crosswalks have been formally dedicated in downtown Smiths Falls as a lasting tribute to those who have served Canada.
About 100 people gathered Wednesday afternoon for a ceremony organized by Royal Canadian Legion Branch 95 at the crosswalk near Market and Main streets.
The event recognized the courage, sacrifice and service of Canadian veterans, along with current members of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Legion Padre Jill Turnbull offered blessings and prayers during the ceremony, while Branch 95 President Jeff Samura and Veterans Crosswalk Planning Committee Chair Ken Manwell delivered remarks.
Samura spoke with us following the ceremony.
In his remarks, Manwell told those assembled, “As we dedicate these crosswalks, let them stand as a symbol of hour, respect and gratituded – not only for today’s generation but for generations yet to come,” preserving sacrifice and honour for today and the future.

Smiths Falls Mayor Shawn Pankow also spoke, recognizing the work that went into the project and its importance to the community.

Our Bob Perreault served as master of ceremonies, introducing speakers and offering reflections on the meaning of the new downtown landmarks.
Branch 95 thanked Pankow, members of council and municipal public works staff for helping bring the project to life. The Smiths Falls Police Service and their YIPI students was also recognized for keeping participants safe during the ceremony.
Organizers said the two crosswalks will provide a permanent and highly visible reminder of the sacrifices made by generations of Canadian service members.
Pankow, Samura and a former Branch 95 president, and veteran, Bruce Irvine then led those assembled across the crosswalk during a ceremonial first crossing.

Following the ceremony, guests were invited to the nearby Legion hall for a gathering celebrating the milestone for both Branch 95 and the Town of Smiths Falls.
Legion members said the crosswalks will help ensure veterans are remembered and honoured every day, not only during formal ceremonies or on Remembrance Day.
