Smiths Falls Police are alerting residents about a high-risk violent sex offender who has recently been observed in the community.
Police say Aaron Gilpin has been seen in local parks and around the gazebo area near Town Hall. Officers also report that he was recently trespassed from a local Tim Hortons location.
According to police, Gilpin is no longer subject to any release conditions and has been assessed as presenting an elevated risk to reoffend. The public notification has been issued as a precautionary measure to help reduce potential risks to community safety.
Police say Gilpin has an extensive criminal record dating back to the early 2000s. His convictions include a child-related sexual assault, assault, weapons offences, disarming a police officer, break and enter offences, and theft-related crimes. His most recent sentence concluded in 2025.
The warning follows a recent call to police regarding a suspicious person near the gazebo area beside Town Hall. While officers determined that no criminal offence had occurred, the incident raised concerns because of Gilpin’s history.
Smiths Falls Police Chief Jodi Empey said the public disclosure was authorized under Ontario Regulation 412/23 of the Community Safety and Policing Act, which permits the release of personal information when police reasonably believe an individual poses a significant risk to others and that disclosure is necessary to reduce that risk.
Police are encouraging residents to remain aware of their surroundings and to contact authorities if they witness suspicious or criminal activity.
