Andrew, Remy, Cst. Keogan, Paris and Maddison
The Smiths Falls Police Service’s Youth in Policing Initiative is off to a positive start this summer.
Four students were selected from 21 applicants following a competitive review of resumes and interviews. Const. Sean Keogan says the candidates have become representatives of the police service.
The students are gaining workplace experience while supporting police programs, organizations and events. Assignments have included helping with the WAK youth program and activities involving members of the adult living community.
Andrew joined because of his interest in law and hopes the summer will provide an early step toward a future career.
He says the schedule has been busier than expected, but remains manageable and enjoyable.
Remy is using the program to explore careers within a police service before heading to university.
She has welcomed the chance to meet children, adults and officers while learning how different roles contribute to public safety.
Paris entered the program with an interest in helping others and learning more about career possibilities.
Her experience has already encouraged her to consider becoming a police officer, alongside her interest in criminology.
Madison has enjoyed seeing how officers connect with residents during community activities.
She has long considered policing, including work with a canine unit or serving as a military police officer.
Keogan says the program builds on the students’ existing commitment to service. More community partnerships and experiences are planned as the summer continues, giving the group more opportunities to learn, contribute and consider their futures.
