A Smiths Falls summer camp is giving local young people a place to build friendships, enjoy outdoor activities and connect with trusted adults during their school break.
The WAK program, operated by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lanark County, is hosting its summer camp near the old water tower in Smiths Falls. The camp offers water games, crafts, healthy food and a welcoming environment where young people can be themselves.
Smiths Falls Police Service Const. Sean Keoghan said the police service has a longstanding partnership with the program.
WAK facilitator Jenna Neal joined the organization in November. She said its focus on mentorship and providing dependable support for children is what drew her to the work.
Campers spend their days playing outside, taking part in water sports and exploring their creativity through crafts. Neal said many are excited to return each day to see their friends and camp staff.
Summer camp caseworker Lindsey Empey said the team works hard to create an open and comfortable setting. She said seeing the children happy and confident makes the work especially meaningful.
Keoghan said activities such as colouring, bubbles, water balloons and sponge games help build trust while giving children positive summer memories.
This year’s summer camp is currently full, showing the strong demand for the service. However, the regular WAK program will return in the fall and remains open to young people between the ages of 11 and 18.
Organizers say the program’s success comes from making every participant feel included, supported and excited to come back.
