Mississippi Valley Conservation is continuing its Water Safety Statement for the Mississippi River watershed following significant rainfall over the long weekend.
Environment Canada issued a Yellow Rainfall Warning as 65 to 100 mm of rain fell across the watershed. Water levels and flows have increased throughout the system and are expected to remain elevated for several days. While some areas have begun to stabilize, other locations continue to see rising water levels as runoff moves downstream.
Water managers are closely monitoring conditions and adjusting dam discharges where possible to reduce impacts as excess water moves through the watershed.
Flooding is not expected at this time. However, higher water levels, fast-moving water, slippery banks, and unstable shorelines create hazardous conditions for recreational users, including anglers, paddlers, hikers, children, and pets.
Residents are urged to exercise extreme caution around all rivers, streams, and water bodies. Parents should ensure children are aware of the dangers and are properly supervised near water.
Those living in flood-prone areas should continue monitoring local conditions and take steps to protect their properties, including checking sump pumps, ensuring downspouts are functioning properly, securing outdoor items, and reviewing municipal emergency preparedness plans.
The Water Safety Statement remains in effect until Friday, August 7, 2026, at 11:59 p.m., unless updated earlier.
