Backyard fire pits may feel like a relaxed summer tradition, but the Smiths Falls Fire Department says they carry many of the same risks as open-air burning.
Fire Prevention Officer Jason Smith says residents often assume fire pits are exempt from rules, but permits, bylaws and fuel restrictions may still apply. He says only clean, approved wood should be burned, never construction debris or household waste.
Smith says fire pits should be kept small and manageable, with a water source close by. He also urges families to supervise children and pets around flames.
Officials say checking local rules and practising caution can help residents enjoy backyard fires safely this season.
