LAWS says you can change everything for a rescued pet in Lanark County
The Lanark Animal Welfare Society says adoption is about more than finding someone willing to take a pet home.
Executive Director Bill Dickson says the goal is to make sure every animal is placed in a safe, loving and lasting home. He says people often first connect with LAWS after seeing a cat or dog online, but the shelter still takes time to learn about the potential adopter.
Dickson says the process is designed to protect the animal and the family taking it in. Staff want to know a pet will have proper support, including access to veterinary care.
He says visits also matter. Someone may arrive with one animal in mind, then make a stronger connection after meeting another cat in person.
Dickson says adoption fees help cover major care before animals leave the shelter.
Dickson says LAWS also works to control the cat population and give animals the best chance at long-term success.
