The Township of Rideau Lakes is reminding residents that permission is required before starting an open-air fire.
Under the township’s Open-Air Burning By-law, approval is required for open-air burning on municipal property. Fires on private property also require permission from the property owner.
The township says simply having access to a property does not mean someone has permission to burn there. Unauthorized fires can result in enforcement action and penalties.
Residents are reminded to obtain any required approvals, confirm they have the property owner’s permission, follow the requirements of the Open-Air Burning By-law and check current fire conditions and restrictions before lighting a fire.
Fires should never be left unattended, as they can quickly get out of control and create a fire-safety risk.
The township is encouraging residents to check the Open-Air Burning By-law or contact the municipality if they are unsure whether a fire is permitted.
When in doubt, check before you burn.
