Don Rideout at the Dedication for the first Crosswalk
A second Veterans Memorial Crosswalk is moving closer to reality in Perth, with a location connecting remembrance, healing and local history.
Founder Don Rideout is working to have the crosswalk painted from the entrance of the Great War Memorial Hospital to the Garden of Hope.
It will use the same design as the first crosswalk at the Crystal Palace, which drew more than 100 people to its dedication.
Rideout says the idea grew from a simple question at home about why Perth did not have one.
The project would add another visible tribute in a community with deep military roots. Unlike seasonal banners, the crosswalk will remain year-round for residents and visitors to see.
Fundraising is underway. Donations can be sent by e-transfer to veterancrosswalkperth@gmail.com. In-person donations can also be made at Blades and Bourbon or Mariposa Design in Perth.
Rideout says nobody should feel pressured to support the project.
That includes residents who already support other veterans’ causes. Rideout says those contributions matter too.
He is equally accepting of people who simply do not agree with the crosswalk.
Some potential donors have also raised concerns because charitable tax receipts are not currently available. Rideout is exploring possible options, while regular receipts can be provided.
The goal is to complete the crosswalk before November 11.
For Rideout, it is about creating a lasting place of remembrance for those who want to be part of it — while respecting those who choose to honour veterans another way.
