Students heading to college or university are getting a reminder that the first weeks away from home can bring more than new classes and freedom.
This week’s episode of “Silence Broken: The IPV Talks” looks at risks young adults can face as they settle into post-secondary life.
Lanark County Interval House Executive Director Erin Lee says the 18-to-24 age group can be especially vulnerable to intimate partner violence, particularly during the first few months on campus, when students are building new friendships and support systems.
Lee says parents should pay attention to changes in mood or behaviour during calls home.
The discussion also looks at digital control, isolation, missed classes and sudden changes in academic plans as possible warning signs.
LanarkLeedsToday.ca’s Jessica Minnie is a recent college grad and says schools can play an important role by making students aware of help before a crisis develops.
The episode encourages students to learn where campus security, escorts, emergency buttons and confidential support services are located.
“Silence Broken” stresses students should be able to ask for help without fear of blame, while families can stay connected by listening, asking questions and making room for honest conversations.
