Smiths Falls council candidate Marie-Pier Guerin says food sovereignty and green infrastructure would be central to her work if elected this fall.
Guerin is one of 15 candidates seeking one of six council seats in the Oct. 26 municipal election.
She says she wants to revive three unused community garden plots and expand food-growing opportunities on public land.
Guerin says high food prices are making it harder for residents to afford fresh food, and she believes Smiths Falls can do more to help people grow their own.
She also wants to see more fruit trees planted around town, where appropriate, and has proposed creating food forests in public spaces.
One of her more ambitious ideas is creating a community orchard on the site of Smiths Falls’ water tower if the structure is eventually removed.
Guerin says the orchard could be maintained by the community and town, while providing free fruit to residents.
She says her goal is to help Smiths Falls become a community that is always growing or processing food together.
