Lanark County has approved a new program aimed at helping low-income children and youth take part in recreation, arts and other community activities.
Director of Social Services Emily Hollington explained how the Active Kids, Bright Futures policy works.
The program will provide eligible children and youth aged 17 and under with the funding to participate in approved activities such as organized sports, 4-H clubs, and arts programs.
Councillor Ed McPherson feels the program should go further.
Payments will be made directly to service providers rather than families.
Council approved the creation of the program in June, with $50,000 allocated in 2026 to establish it.
Funding comes from revenue generated through the Warden’s Golf Tournament, with proportionate funding from the Town of Smiths Falls.
The program took effect September 1st.
