A free guided hike near Portland and Lombardy is giving people a chance to enjoy the fall colours while learning what makes them happen.
The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority will host its Fall Colours & Forestry Guided Hike at Mill Pond Conservation Area on Saturday, Oct. 3.
The hike begins at 10 a.m. and follows a three-kilometre loop along the blue and orange trails.
RVCA forestry manager Ian Cochrane will lead the walk through the former sugar bush, sharing information about the forest and the science behind changing leaves.
The route is considered easy to moderate, although hikers should expect some steep slopes, exposed roots and rocks.
Light refreshments will be offered when the hike wraps up.
Registration is required and space is limited.
The hike is also the final public event connected to the RVCA’s 60th Anniversary Outdoor Adventure Challenge, which encourages people to explore all 11 conservation areas during 2026.
